Human Motor Actions: Bernstein Reassessed (Advances in Psychology)

Human Motor Actions: Bernstein Reassessed (Advances in Psychology) Review

See more picture

Under the title The Coordination and Regulation of Movements, an English language version of six of the most important papers of the Russian physiologist Nicholas Bernstein was published in 1967 (Pergamon Press Ltd.). That work has been out of print for some years, but in view of the frequency of its citation in recent works on movement control, a republication was considered desirable. However, since some of the papers in the first edition were written in the 1930's, it was felt that readers' interests would be better served if, after each chapter, an evaluation of the work and, where necessary, an update of the data in the light of more recent findings was included. Contributors of international renown provide such chapters.

New Handbook of Methods in Nonverbal Behavior Research (Series in Affective Science)

New Handbook of Methods in Nonverbal Behavior Research (Series in Affective Science) Review

See more picture

For many years the Handbook of Methods in Nonverbal Behavior Research (Scherer & Ekman, 1982) has been an invaluable text for researchers looking for methods to study nonverbal behavior and the expression of affect. A successor to this essential text, The New Handbook of Methods in Nonverbal Behavior Research includes chapters on coding and methodological issues for a variety of areas in nonverbal behavior: facial actions, vocal behavior, and body movement. Issues relevant to judgment studies, methodology, reliability, analyses, etc. have also been updated. The topics are broad and include specific information about methodology and coding strategies in education, psychotherapy, deception, nonverbal sensitivity, and marital and group behavior. There is also a chapter detailing specific information on the technical aspects of recording the voice and face, and specifically in relation to deception studies.

This volume will be valuable for both new researchers and those already working in the fields of nonverbal behavior, affect expression, and related topics. It will play a central role in further refining research methods and coding strategies, allowing a comparison of results from various laboratories where research on nonverbal behavior is being conducted. This will advance research in the field and help to coordinate results so that a more comprehensive understanding of affect expression can be developed.

FOREIGN & COLONIAL EMG MKTS INV TR PLC: International Competitive Benchmarks and Financial Gap Analysis (Financial Performance Series)

FOREIGN & COLONIAL EMG MKTS INV TR PLC: International Competitive Benchmarks and Financial Gap Analysis (Financial Performance Series) Review

See more picture

Are the combined human resources at FOREIGN & COLONIAL EMG MKTS INV TR PLC productive? There is no absolute answer to this question. This report considers the extent to which the company's labor deployment indicators differ from global benchmarks. In this report we consider forecasts of differences between labor ratios and the resulting return on this human investment compared to global benchmarks; the estimation of such differences is commonly called a "gap analysis." What is the ratio of short-term and long-term assets to employee? What are typical capital-labor ratios? How different are these ratios to companies serving the same link in the value chain? What are the average sales and net profits per employee compared to global benchmarks? These and over 50 other indicators of labor productivity are considered in this report. The report does so by going beyond traditional analyses by considering companies competing in the same or similar industrial classification at a global level. The goal of this report, therefore, is to assist consultants, human resource managers, strategic planners, and corporate officers in gauging estimates of a company's human resource indicators compared to firms competing or participating in the same economic sector, at the global level. This report is not about whether a particular company or industry has performed well or poorly in the past or will do so in the future. With the globalization of markets, greater foreign competition, and the reduction of entry barriers, it becomes all the more important to benchmark a company's human resource indicators against other firms on a worldwide basis. Doing so, however, is not an obvious task. First, one needs to find firms competing in the same sector, but not necessarily competing directly with the company in local markets. These firms should not be perceived, therefore, to be direct competitors to the company in question, but simply those that have been classified by various sources (e.g. EDGAR or similar foreign filings), as competing to serve customers in the same link of the value chain, or broad industrial classification, as identified by SIC, NAICS or similar codes. Second, given the international nature of the task, one needs to control for exchange rate volatility. Finally, one needs use comparable financial standards. This report overcomes these issues and gives full human resources benchmarks vis-a-vis worldwide competitors who are present in the same narrow industrial classification. Benchmarks cover labor-asset ratios, labor-liability ratios, and labor-income ratios. Since our reports are printed on demand, the statistics reported are for the latest quarter and are the most up to date available (4 updates are produced each year). Each report provides over 100 statistics and 40 graphs to the reader. This reports is on FOREIGN & COLONIAL EMG MKTS INV TR PLC, EDINBURGH, United Kingdom.

La plasticité de la fonction motrice (Collection de L'Académie Européenne de Médecine de Réadaptation) (French Edition)

La plasticité de la fonction motrice (Collection de L'Académie Européenne de Médecine de Réadaptation) (French Edition) Review

See more picture

Balancing Efficiencies and Tradeoffs in Epidemiological Field Studies: Evaluating EMG Exposure Assessment for Low Back Injury Risk Factors in Heavy Industry

Balancing Efficiencies and Tradeoffs in Epidemiological Field Studies: Evaluating EMG Exposure Assessment for Low Back Injury Risk Factors in Heavy Industry Review

See more picture

In order to investigate work-related back injuries, researchers need efficient, accurate occupational exposure assessment methods suitable for large samples. This book examines critical decisions for measuring physical workload: How should exposure be measured? For what duration? Who should be measured, and how many times? To answer these questions, low-back electromyography (EMG) was collected during 138 full-shift field measurements over 30 different job titles at 50 different worksites in 5 heavy industries: forestry, transportation, wood products, construction, and warehousing. Observations and self-reports of working exposures were collected concurrently. Among the results emerges a theme of optimizing the choices for study design and sampling strategy. The ubiquitous constraints of budget and access to industrial populations require tradeoffs between using a highly accurate exposure assessment method on a few people or a less precise method on a larger number of people, between measurement duration and sample size, and between measuring many individuals or repeats within individuals. The results presented help inform risk guidelines, policy, and efforts to control exposure.

Therapeutic Modalities in Rehabilitation, Fourth Edition (Therapeutic Modalities for Physical Therapists) Review

See more picture

Comprehensive Coverage of Therapeutic Modalities Used in a Clinical Setting

A Doody's Core Title for 2011!

Therapeutic Modalities in Rehabilitation is a theoretically based but practically oriented guide to the use of therapeutic modalities for practicing clinicians and their students. It clearly presents the basis for use of each different type of modality and allows clinicians to make their own decision as to which will be the most effective in a given situation. Presented in full color, the text describes various concepts, principles, and theories that are supported by scientific research, factual evidence, and experience of the authors in dealing with various conditions.

The chapters in this text are divided into six parts:
Part I––Foundations of Therapeutic Modalities begins with a chapter that discusses the scientific basis for using therapeutic modalities and classifies the modalities according to the type of energy each uses.. Guidelines for selecting the most appropriate modalities for use in different phases of the healing process are presented.
Part II––Electrical Energy Modalities includes detailed discussions of the principles of electricity, and electrical stimulating currents, iontophoresis, and biofeedback.
Part III––Thermal Energy Modalities discusses those modalities which produce a change in tissue temperatures through conduction including thermotherapy and cryotherapy.
Part IV-Sound Energy Modalities discusses those modalities that utilize acoustic energy to produce a therapeutic effect. These include therapeutic ultrasound and a lesser known modality-extracorporal shockwave therapy.
Part V––Electromagnetic Energy Modalities includes chapters on both the diathermies and low-level laser therapy.
Part VI––Mechanical Energy Modalities includes chapters on traction, intermittent compression and therapeutic massage.

Each chapter ins Parts II-IV discuss: the physiologic basis for use, clinical applications, specific techniques of application through the use of related laboratory activities, and relevant individual case studies for each therapeutic modality.
